Back in 2012, when Irving last won the top spot, the company was just coming off its big NSS win. Under that program it was tasked with delivering on the combatant side of the program. In other words, Irving would be building Canada’s next generation of warships.
Now, over a decade later, the company has selected a design for CSC, the Type 26, Global Combat Ship from BAE and has partnered with leading naval contractor, Lockheed Martin Canada, to provide the mission systems for the ship.
On this year’s #1 selection, CDR Editor-in-Chief, Peter Kitchen, commented, “Today’s Irving Shipbuilding still embodies the entrepreneurial spirit exemplified by patriarch, K.C. Irving when he founded the parent company back in the 1920s.”
He added, “For its ongoing support of the Halifax class, for its construction of the AOPS ships and for its commitment to build the RCN’s next generation of warships, we think the time is certainly right to shine the spotlight once again on Irving Shipbuilding as Canada’s # 1 Defence Company.”
In commenting on the #1 ranking, Irving CEO, Dirk Lesko, said “This is an honour that shows how NSS is delivering capability coast-to-coast-to coast for Canada.”
He added, “At Irving Shipbuilding we’re grateful for the opportunity to expand the capability of our facilities, grow and develop our workforce, renew Canada’s federal fleet, and support a sustainable marine sector.”
This year, CDR has added thirteen new companies to the survey demonstrating the continued growth in Canada’s defence industry. And also, illustrating the diversity of this industry, the Top 100 now boasts two indigenous-owned companies (Nasittuq and Race Rocks).
This year’s Top 100 proves that the industry has come all the way back from the vicissitudes of Covid. As always, with the publication of its annual Top 100 Defence Companies Survey & Ranking, CDR’s goal is to showcase Canada’s defence industry and all that it has to offer.
